Crude Oil decreased 30.71 USD/BBL or 50.19% since the beginning of 2020, according to trading on a contract for difference (CFD) that tracks the benchmark market for this commodity. From 1958 to 1970 prices were stable at about $3.00 per barrel, but in real terms the price of crude oil declined from above $15 to below $12 per barrel. The decline in the price of crude when adjusted for inflation was further exacerbated in 1971 and 1972 by the weakness of the US dollar. Brent crude oil fell as much as 1.3% to $59.01 per barrel while US crude dropped nearly 1% to $53.373 per barrel, around 12:40 PM NY time. High oil prices cause chaos. But why didn’t the situation keep spiraling in 2012, when oil prices shot higher than literally ever before in the U.S.? The following chart shows US imported crude oil prices, adjusted for inflation, since 1970. The chart reveals a potential historical analogue to the recent decline in oil prices. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, oil reached an inflation-adjusted value above $100 dollars a barrel in the wake of the Iranian Revolution and Iran-Iraq war, only to decline to about $30 by 1986. In 1996 dollars crude oil prices fluctuated between $14 - $16 during the same period. The apparent price increases were just keeping up with inflation. From 1958 to 1970 prices were stable at about $3.00 per barrel, but in real terms the price of crude oil declined from above $15 to below $12 per barrel.
